NASA's New Jet Breaks the Sound Barrier Without the Boom
NASA's quest to make supersonic flight viable over land has taken a visible step forward. Test footage released Thursday shows the X-59 experimental aircraft performing in-air maneuvers above California's Mojave Desert—marking the latest milestone for a plane engineered to solve one of aviation's stubbornest problems.
The Sonic Boom Problem
When aircraft punch through the sound barrier, they generate shock waves that reach the ground as a sonic boom—loud enough to disturb communities, damage homes, and startle animals.
These thunderous disruptions have long prevented supersonic flight over land, forcing commercial aviation to remain subsonic over populated areas.
Engineering a Gentler Shock
NASA's answer is the X-59, a needle-nosed jet designed to cruise at over 1,000 miles per hour—roughly twice the speed of a commercial airliner—while reshaping those shock waves into something far gentler.
The agency expects the result to register as a mere thump, comparable to distant thunder or a car door closing down the block.
Testing Progress: The newly released footage captures the X-59 rolling side to side, pitching up and down, and deploying its landing gear in flight.
More consequential tests lie ahead: NASA plans to fly the aircraft over U.S. neighborhoods and survey residents about what they hear.
