The Mediterranean Diet's Impact on Multiple Sclerosis
What if the most powerful tool for managing multiple sclerosis isn't just found in a pharmacy, but in the grocery aisle? For years, patients have been told that diet might help, but long-term data on how specific eating patterns change the course of the disease has been elusive.
A definitive 10-year study of 132 participants from the AusLong Study now reveals that for women, the Mediterranean diet isn’t just a heart-healthy suggestion—it is a statistically significant shield against the frequency of MS relapses. This matters because while modern medicine can suppress the immune system’s attack on the brain, finding lifestyle interventions that actually stretch the time between debilitating flares offers patients a rare sense of agency over their own biology.
The Study Design & Key Findings
Diet Variations Tested
The scientists tracked two variations of the diet:
- The traditional Mediterranean pattern (aMED)
- A modified version (aMED-Red) that allowed for approximately 65g/day of unprocessed red meat. The results suggest that strict deprivation might not be necessary.
Impact on Relapse Rates for Women
For women in the study, adherence to the diet significantly extended the time between relapses.
- Traditional Diet (aMED): Every one-unit increase in adherence reduced the risk of a sooner relapse by 6% (aHR = 0.94, p = 0.009).
- Diet with Red Meat (aMED-Red): Those following this version saw an even more pronounced 7% increase in the time between relapses (aHR = 0.93, p = 0.001) for every one-unit increase in their score.
Limitations and Neutral Findings
The study also provided a critical reality check regarding other measures of the disease.
- No Effect on Disability: Despite reducing relapses, researchers found no statistically significant association between the diet and long-term disability progression for either diet group. This suggests diet may manage acute inflammation but not the underlying neurodegeneration.
- No Clear Result for Men: No significant associations were found for the male cohort. However, with only 27 men in the study, it lacked the statistical power to draw firm conclusions for males.
Biological Logic and Future Research
The biological logic is centered on inflammation. The high fiber, polyphenols, and monounsaturated fats inherent in Mediterranean staples appear to dampen the inflammatory processes that drive MS relapses.
While these results are promising, the team notes the reliance on self-reported dietary data and the specific Australian geography of the cohort. Future research will need to determine if these dietary benefits hold across more diverse populations and if they can be observed in clinical measures like MRI scans.
