Michelle Obama: From Chicago's South Side to the World Stage

Imagine a young girl from the South Side of Chicago who loved to read, excelled in school, and never guessed she'd one day be a global icon. Born on January 17, 1964, Michelle grew up in a close-knit, two-story bungalow with her parents, Fraser and Marian Robinson, and older brother, Craig (Obama 2018). Her father was a pump operator for the Chicago Water Department, and her mother was a secretary, later becoming a stay-at-home parent (Biography.com 2023). Michelle was a bright student from a young age, even skipping second grade (Obama 2018). She attended Whitney M. Breakthrough Journey

Michelle’s path led her to Princeton University, where she majored in sociology and African American studies, graduating cum laude in 1985 (Princeton University 2019). She then earned her Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Harvard Law School in 1988 (Harvard Law School 2020).

After law school, she returned to Chicago and began her career as a lawyer at the firm Sidley Austin, where she specialized in marketing and intellectual property law (Sidley Austin 2023). It was there, in 1989, that she met a summer associate assigned to her as a mentor: Barack Obama (Obama 2018). Their connection was undeniable, and they married on October 3, 1992 (Biography.com 2023).

Michelle, however, realized that corporate law wasn’t her passion. She transitioned into public service, working as an Assistant Commissioner of Planning and Development for the City of Chicago and later as the founding Executive Director of the Chicago chapter of Public Allies, a nonprofit organization that trains young adults for public service (Public Allies 2024; University of Chicago 2005). Before Barack's presidential campaign, she also served as Vice President for Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago Medical Center (University of Chicago 2005).

Hallmark Moments as First Lady

As First Lady from 2009 to 2017, Michelle Obama became a powerful advocate, launching initiatives that touched millions of lives:

  • "Let's Move!": Launched in 2010, this initiative aimed to combat childhood obesity through healthy eating and physical activity (Obama White House Archives 2017).
  • "Reach Higher": Started in 2014, "Reach Higher" encouraged young people to pursue higher education and career training (White House Archives 2017).
