Cosmic Lenses Distort Gravity Waves

New research shows tiny cosmic lenses can dramatically warp gravitational wave signals from merging black holes.

Scientists looked at how micro-lensing (gravitational lensing caused by compact objects like stars or small black holes) affects gravitational waves. They wanted to see if these effects could be detected by instruments like LIGO.

Theoretical Calculations and Findings

The team ran theoretical calculations. They analyzed properties of gravitational waves caused by colliding cosmic objects. They focused on how micro-lenses bend these waves. The researchers used special equations to figure out how much the waves would get boosted or shifted.

The study found micro-lensing changes gravitational waves in big ways. It can amplify or shift their signals depending on their frequency. The scientists calculated these changes for different lens types and wave sources. They saw these effects varied greatly with lens details like mass or density. The chances of micro-lensing happening are "not small," especially for objects in the Milky Way's disk, they found.

"As micro-lensing does not affect each sight line in the same manner, a comparison of the red and the green color waveform in bottom panel of figure (4) is a representation of the differences that we may encounter due to this effect," the authors noted. These findings highlight that micro-lensing can make it tough to identify signals from the same source if they’ve been lensed multiple times. Imagine looking at a distant light through a wavy window; it might seem like multiple lights.

Limitations and Future Research

The study used some simplified assumptions, like ignoring certain complex gravity effects. The likelihood of micro-lensing also varies based on many unknown variables. Future research will explore these effects in more detail, preparing for even more sensitive gravitational wave detectors.
