Tree Root Cuttings Create New Forests

Scientists discover simple method for mass-producing high-quality Paulownia trees.

New research indicates that root cuttings are a highly effective way to grow Paulownia trees in large numbers.


Paulownia trees are fast-growing and valuable, yet they struggle to produce viable seeds for new plants. Scientists sought a reliable method to multiply these trees, asking: Can we use parts of the tree, like roots or stems, to grow new ones?

The Experiment

The research team collected root and stem pieces from two Paulownia species: P. elongata and P. fortunei.

Methodology:

  • Root Cuttings: Pieces were cut to 10cm long. Some were dipped in Indole-3-Butyric Acid (IBA) at varying strengths.
  • Planting: All pieces were planted in soil-filled bags. Stem pieces were planted upright.
  • Location: The experiment was conducted in a nursery in Ghana.

Astonishing Results for Root Cuttings

Nearly 80 percent of both Paulownia species propagated from root cuttings successfully survived! Sprouts appeared within 14 days, with most showing new growth between 15 and 29 days. Interestingly, the levels of plant hormone did not affect the number of sprouts.

Stem Cuttings: In stark contrast, stem cuttings did not take root, even though they initially sprouted leaves.

"The use of stem cuttings of Paulownia tree species for propagation is fruitless, thus inappropriate," the authors concluded.


Significance of Findings

These findings confirm that growing Paulownia from root cuttings is remarkably successful. This method is likened to taking a small piece of a strong tree and empowering it to become a whole new tree. This technique is significantly superior to attempting propagation from seeds, which can be slow and unreliable.


Limitations & Next Steps

The study focused on only two types of cuttings and one plant hormone. Future research could explore other factors that might aid Paulownia growth. However, the current findings clearly establish root cuttings as the preferred method.

This simple method offers a powerful solution for establishing large-scale Paulownia tree plantations.
